My mom had kind of a hard time in her teens - her mom was very sick (and passed when she was 19), she had a lot of siblings to help take care of, and her dad had to work a ton to make ends meet. So when it came to school, it was really difficult for her to finish and do well.
Fast forward past 25+ years of hard work and good timing, where she had been working above her education level in management. The job required that she get a degree, so she started a few years back and a semester before graduating, she was laid off. Unemployment let her finish the degree so that she could get back into the workforce at the same level she had left off of, luckily.
She just graduated with her degree in Business Management right after turning 50 last month. To say that I'm proud of her is such an understatement - we bonded over tests and professors and homework overload, and I know how hard she worked to get it done. We took up the entire front row of our section last weekend to celebrate her huge accomplishment. Congrats, mom!
